Urban peripheral spaces: Patterns, factors and consequences

Abstract

This article first examines the concept of urban peripheral from different perspectives. Then, different sub-urban patterns are analyzed in terms of population structure, motivation and function. furthermore, the study investigated the factors of creation and expansion of suburban as well as the consequences of the expansion of urban peripheral spaces. Findings show that population growth, rapid urbanization and urban sprawl are obvious factors in the production of suburban spaces. But the shape and variety of these spaces depend on the common social and economic trends in countries. Social and economic uneven trends, and social exclusion play a major role in the diversity of suburban forms. In a economy network with information technology, one cannot expect an improvement in the status quo with economic neo-liberalism, which has been clearly demonstrated by Northern Europe as well as countries that have turned their backs on central planned systems. Until the 1990s, the analysis and planning of the city and its surroundings was based on the approach of separating the elements and factors affecting change, which made integrated management of the city and its surroundings difficult. This suggests that comprehensive urban-regional planning cannot rely solely on a spatial and positivist analysis approach. It is the proper combination of methods and consideration of political, historical, social and economic trends in planning that can improve the current situation. The system of governance s should organize the institutional structure in such a way that while not blocking the way for personal initiatives and individual motivations, the efforts of individuals and organizations to maximize benefits are in line with long-term interests and national development interests
