Abstract
The population of South Khorasan Province is a village that has experienced severe weather events in the last two decades, this part of the population is vulnerable due to significant dependence on climate change. Agriculture as the most important climate-sensitive livelihood option in rural areas of the province is the main source of local economy, so this population in recent years as environmental and climatic migrants have created the main body of peripheral areas, especially in the city of Birjand. In order to discover the dimensions of vulnerability in suburban areas, 20 quantitative biophysical, social and economic indicators were used. The principal component analysis (PCA) method was used to analyze data. The results of this study showed that the current socio-economic conditions and increasing environmental pressure as a result of human-environmental interactions are the main causes of vulnerability in most peripherals of Birjand, which have different capacities based on the degree of vulnerability to climate change. Peripherals areas located in the west and southwest of Birjand, including Chekond, Hajiabad, Kalateh Ghaeni, have the highest vulnerability to the consequences of climate change. The results of this study can be used to decide on the selection of strategies for adaptation to climate change in the metropolitan areas of Birjand based on the vulnerability of these areas for managers and planners
